According to the average figures from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, the Swiss spend 90 minutes per day in transport and travel 25'000 km per year. Facing the increase in traffic, pollution and climate change, a reflection on a new mobility is required.

New Mobility

For the past 30 years, "intelligent mobility", which aims at sustainable mobility by using digital tools, has been developing in various fields related to transportation. It improves the daily life of users by making urban traffic more fluid and reduces the impact of mobility on the environment.

In this context, the TaaS (Transport as a Service) project began in February 2022. It brings together 13 companies and 4 academic partners with the aim of developing the mobility of the future in business parks. This first collaborative multi-sector and inter-cantonal project is supported by the NRP of the canton of Fribourg, the SPEI and the LADE of the canton of Vaud.

Based on the case study of the Payerne Swiss Aeropole, the project team develops a Digital twin: a virtual model designed to accurately reflect a real case. This virtual model can be used to run simulations, investigate performance issues and generate possible improvements, all with the aim of producing valuable information that can then be reapplied to the real physical object.

Roland Scherwey, professor at HEIA-FR and project leader with Romuald Mosqueron, professor at HEIG-VD, tells us more about the project:

"With this intercantonal TaaS project between FR and VD, which is also the first PCM (multi-sectorial collaborative projects) project funded by the NRP, we will establish a business case, collect the requirements and develop a Digital Twin for smart Business Parks. By means of simulation, validation and optimizations of this Digital Twin, a detailed roadmap for the step-by-step implementation of efficient and sustainable mobility can then be elaborated and validated on the basis of the real use case AEROPOLE 2. TaaS is part of a Smart City approach and can contribute significantly to the optimization of transport and energy."

Thanks to his Model-based Engineering specialists, ROSAS, as part of the academic partner HEIA-FR, provides expertise in the systems analysis and simulation development required for the project.

The development of tomorrow's mobility is a major challenge. It is with local experiments, such as the TaaS project, that shaping the future offers responding to users’ needs will be made possible.
