The Robust and Safe Systems Center ROSAS - the “Safety Factory” to transform applied research into technology development!

  • Applied research in technology development programs

The unique combination of  engineering expertise in safety, security, reliability and maintainability of systems and the transfer of innovative ideas in applied research enables ROSAS  Center to become a valuable “safety factory” partner in technology development in key industrial domains including aerospace, automotive, energy and industrial automation.

  • Highly acknowledged industrial and academic partners

Funded by the companies Johnson Electric International AG, Liebherr Machines Bulle SA, Meggitt SA and the Haute École d´Ingénierie et d´Architecture Fribourg (School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg – HEIA-FR) ROSAS operates as the extended applied research work bench in systems safety, security and reliability engineering for its industrial ROSAS partners as well as for other industrial clients and academic partners.

  • Tailored education

Closely linked to the HEIA-FR and its affiliate institute iSIS (institute of smart and secure systems) ROSAS creates and transforms knowledge by teaching students in safety and reliability as a demanding and future-oriented engineering discipline, thus translating it to the benefit of its industrial partners and clients and to our increasing network of clients and cooperation partners.

  • Swiss Safety Engineering

Located in Switzerland as the embodiment for quality and innovation ROSAS will evolve into an internationally highly acknowledged center of competence in systems engineering for safety-critical and highly-reliable applications.

“ROSAS Fribourg” is an association sponsored jointly by the Canton of Fribourg (Switzerland) and our strategic partner companies and the ROSAS Center Fribourg represents its operations branch.

ROSAS is situated at the blueFACTORY, a zero-carbon emission innovation quarter in the heart of Fribourg. ROSAS is embedded as competence center in the technology and innovation platform INNOSQARE aiming for the creation of cross-domain synergies in a number of applied research competence centers and clusters.

ROSAS Center Director - Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Berns

Having graduated in aerospace engineering from the Technical University Munich in 1983 he gained first industrial experience as systems engineer.

In 1983 he joined the Institute for Jet Propulsion Systems at the Universität der Bundeswehr München, from where he received his doctorate in aerospace engineering in 1991.

In 1991 he started as one of the very first engineers at the joint venture company BMW Rolls-Royce, which later became Rolls-Royce Deutschland. As Chief Performance Engineer, he was a member of the BR 700 project team which was in charge of developing Rolls-Royce´ next generation of medium thrust class engines for business aircrafts and commercial airplanes.

From 1998 to 2005 he had held a number of senior management positions at debis Systemhaus, a Daimler-affiliate IT company, at the Canadian company MDS Aero Support Corporation, a leading manufacturer of turbomachinery testing facilities, and at ALSTOM Power Switzerland in the new gas turbines development division.

In 1996 he founded his own enterprise, BERNS Engineers, to offer safety and reliability engineering support in the development of systems and products across a number of industrial domains.

Since the foundation of ROSAS Fribourg in June 2015, Dr. Wolfgang Berns is the Director of ROSAS Center Fribourg (Switzerland), and Professor at the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (Switzerland), a member of the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland.
